Craig Morris, Olympic Canoe Coach

In our first ever coaches corner, Ian and Keith chat to Craig Morris about all things coaching, constraints and Canoeing

Craig Morris is an Olympic Canoe Slalom Coach and High Performance Coach consultant with over 17 years of experience in performance coaching.

A person-centred, inspirational leader, Craig has gained recognition both nationally and internationally for his ability to develop individual athletes and teams through a trans-disciplinary approach to development transcending pathway to podium. 

Personal coach to 15 individual senior Olympic, World and European podiums and over 30 World Cup podiums, across multiple athletes and 4 Olympic disciplines, Craig is regarded as one of the World’s leading Canoe Slalom coaches and skill acquisition specialists.

Recognised for committing significant time to building a coaching chain, both within Canoeing and across other sports, Craig’s passion and skill to support other coaches and engage on a mutual learning journey through dyadic mentoring is growing rapidly.


Matt Wood, Senior Lecturer in Sport Pedagogy at Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK

Senior Lecturer and Athletics Coach, Matt Wood talks about his research in Athletics.

Matt is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Physical Education and Coaching in the School of Sport and Health Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Matthew is responsible for delivery across a range of theory to practice modules, including practical athletics modules underpinned by ecological dynamics and a constraints-led approach. In his doctoral research Matthew is currently working with a NGB exploring the application of a CLA to coach learning. He has worked as a coach and coach educator in England, Scotland and Wales across youth development, speed, hurdles, combined events and physical preparation. As a coach he has nineteen years’ experience of working with age group talent, representing Great Britain as a Team Coach at U18, U20 and U23 European and World Championships.


MaRIANNE DAVIES, Senior Coach Developer, UK Coaching

Marianne’s coaching experience includes more than 25 years of working in sports, academic and corporate environments. She is a coach developer, coach educator, assessor, IQA and national trainer. She is currently working as a Senior Coach Developer for UK Coaching. This role includes shaping learning and development opportunities for the coach development & education workforces, working across the variety of roles (Coach Developer, Tutor and Assessor for example). Creating learning and development experiences with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that our work leads the industry in this space. The work is evidence informed and is shaped by the professional standards in our fields. Generating and sharing insight is a crucial part of this role.

Before working at UK Coaching, Marianne spent eight years in the role of Coaching Manager for a National Governing Body (Canoe Wales) and before that was responsible for participation development, community and inclusion. This included working with many other organisations and stakeholders to design, deliver and implement workforce training. Marianne is currently working for UK Coaching as a Senior Coach Developer
